Every app needs a backend: a database, APIs and the logic that determines what happens to the data. Traditionally, a development team spends weeks or months coding this. Xano lets you build the backend without coding. This article explains how Xano works, which AI features were added in 2026, what the plans cost and when Xano is worth it for SMEs.
What is Xano?
Xano is a no-code backend platform. It provides a PostgreSQL database, a visual editor for APIs and business logic, and hosting in one package. You build the user interface, the part people actually see, with a separate tool such as WeWeb, FlutterFlow, Bubble or a coded web app. Xano delivers the data via REST APIs to any frontend that can send HTTP requests.
If you want to understand the difference between frontend and backend in more detail, you'll find the basics in our article Frontend vs. backend.
How does Xano work?
You start by setting up the database: tables for customers, orders or products, with relationships between them. It feels similar to a spreadsheet, but a full relational database runs underneath.
Next, you build the APIs. Each endpoint consists of a function stack, a sequence of steps: query data, validate it, transform it, save it, call an external API or trigger an email. You put these steps together visually. For special cases, you can add your own code.
From the Essential plan upwards, Xano offers branching and merging. You develop new features in a copy, test them and only then merge them into the live version. Xano also automatically generates OpenAPI documentation that many frontend tools can import directly.
AI in Xano: agents, MCP servers and the Developer MCP
Xano introduced three AI features in 2025 and 2026. With Xano Agents, you build AI agents directly in the backend. You choose the language model, give the agent tools such as database queries or API calls, and trigger it from an endpoint, a scheduled task or an external event.
With MCP servers, you make data and functions from Xano available to external AI assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT. We explain what the Model Context Protocol is in our article MCP explained.
The Developer MCP is aimed at developers. It lets AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor work directly with Xano projects.
How much does Xano cost in 2026?
Xano charges a flat price per plan rather than by usage. Xano discontinued its former Starter plan at 29 USD in January 2026. As of September 2026, these plans apply with annual billing:
Monthly billing costs more. The Pro plan offers add-ons such as extra compute. You'll find current prices at xano.com/pricing. With our partner link, you get 10% off the annual plan.
What Xano is good for
Xano plays to its strengths when an application needs more than a table and a form. A typical case is a customer portal where customers submit requests, upload documents and track the status, while staff review and approve them in the background. Xano handles the data, permissions and processes, and the frontend displays them.
Xano also works well as a central data hub. Orders, customer data and product information from several systems come together in one database and are available through a single API. To connect other tools, an automation platform such as Make is often added.
Other use cases include internal tools with complex logic and backends for SaaS products that need to scale with their user numbers.
Xano makes less sense for simple lists or forms without their own logic. Tools such as monday.com or Airtable are enough for that. And if you only need a quick prototype, an AI app builder such as Lovable is often faster.
Xano, Supabase or Firebase?
Supabase and Firebase are often mentioned as alternatives to Xano. All three provide a database, user management and APIs. The biggest difference lies in how the business logic is built.
In short: if you want to build and maintain the logic without coding, Xano is the best fit. If you have a development team and want maximum control over the code, take a look at Supabase.
Data protection and security for Swiss companies
Xano states GDPR compliance and various security certifications for its paid plans. Before you process sensitive data, it's best to check directly with Xano which certifications currently apply and to which plan. For health data, the Pro plan offers a HIPAA option. On the Custom plan, Xano can be self-hosted or run in specific regions.
For Swiss SMEs, what matters most is which region the Xano instance runs in and whether a data processing agreement is in place. Clarify this during setup. Data in the EU is easier to handle under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), as the Federal Council recognises EU countries as providing an adequate level of data protection.
Xano with WeWeb as the frontend
Xano provides the backend but still needs an interface. At Blinno, we often combine Xano with WeWeb, a no-code frontend builder that can connect to Xano APIs directly. We show how the two work together in our article WeWeb and Xano.
Blinno as your Xano agency
Blinno is a certified Xano partner and works as a Xano agency for companies in Switzerland and the DACH region. We build backends for customer portals, internal tools and platforms. For the Canton of Aargau, we built a digital application platform with WeWeb and Xano that is now in long-term use. Find out more in the Canton of Aargau case study.
We support you with planning the data model, building the APIs, migrating existing data and connecting your systems. Find out more about our custom solutions and on our Xano tool page.
